Ladders are very handy for home maintenance projects.

Ladders are very handy for home maintenance projects.

Ladders today are used for different applications. Many people use ladders to get up on roofs, paint the house or clean out the gutters. Either way, ladders are a common part of any household. There are different types of ladders, from extension to step ladders and fibreglass to aluminium. Working with a ladder on a slope, however, can be a very dangerous task. There are ways, though, to successfully and safely work with a ladder on a slope.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Stakes
  • Straps
  • Hammer
  • Rope
  1. 1

Inspect the area where the ladder needs to be positioned. Gauge how steep the slope will be. Pick the type of ladder that will work best. For taller applications, an extension ladder will be necessary. Look over the ladder to ensure it’s in good working condition. Verify there are no loose rungs and all the steps and stiles running up the ladder are in good shape.

  2. 2

Extend the ladder out and lean it up against the house. Lock the feet of the ladder into place on the slope. Verify the ladder is as secure as possible.

  3. 3

Hammer two stakes into the ground around the ladder on either side. Run a strap wrapping around the stakes and the ladder. This secures the ladder to the ground.

  4. 4

Climb up the ladder about halfway or until reaching a window. Open the window and wrap another strap around the ladder. Connect it to a heavy object inside the house to further secure the ladder.

  5. 5

Climb near the top of the ladder. Wrap rope around the stiles and connect it to the house to completely secure the ladder.
